Diversifying risk in banking and Payment service providers (PSPs)
Merchant accounts and gateways might use the same acquiring banks and channels - so how can we be sure that we have assess the risk accordingly?
Understanding the complexities of payment service providers (PSPs), merchant accounts, and gateways is essential for evaluating risk accurately. Despite their apparent independence, these entities often share acquiring banks and channels, complicating risk assessment. PSPs may even resell services to each other, creating a network of hidden connections. While online businesses may believe they're diversifying risk by signing agreements with multiple PSPs, they might unknowingly rely on the same acquiring bank, undermining their risk management strategy. Similarly, gateways, although not directly handling funds, can still pose a risk if they use the same acquiring bank as other providers. This interconnectedness can leave operators exposed if a bank fails, jeopardizing all associated channels. Recognizing these complex relationships is crucial for effective risk management in the payment industry, ensuring companies don't fall into a false sense of security.

In today's environment, having a banking expert or payment professional within your team is more crucial than ever. This expertise is unique and cannot be delegated to your accountant, lawyer, or treasurer - and authentic payment professionals are scarce. It doesn't cost a lot to set up a proper plan when it comes to banking and payment but it can cost a lot not to have any, when it comes to managing your most valuable assets.
